SGP2 Qualifying: Germans narrowly miss out, hope for wildcards

The top twelve places for the SGP2, which begins on 10 July in Malilla, Sweden, were decided in Pardubice (Czech Republic), Fjelsted (Denmark) and Krško (Slovenia), with three further places going to permanent wildcard riders. It is not only the German riders who must hope for a wildcard – all five were eliminated – but also defending champion Nazar Parnitskyi. The Ukrainian scored just eleven points in Pardubice and finished sixth, failing to qualify. Behind Parnitskyi, Patrick Hyjek finished in 7th place. The Bavarian scored consistently, but fell three points short of the top four.

In Krško, Mario Häusl was the only German in the field to try his luck, but with a crash in the second heat and a zero in the fourth, the Bavarian dropped too many points.

In Fjelsted, Tim Widera from the Palatinate stepped in at short notice for Ben Iken, whilst Janek Konzack was the second German in the field. Whilst Widera failed to score any points, finishing on two, Konzack finished the race in fifth place, just behind the qualifying positions. Konzack suffered a retirement in his heat against Kevin Malkiewicz, Antoni Mencel and Tate Zischke, but still managed to score nine points in his remaining heats.

Over the coming days, the three permanent wildcards and the reserve list for the races in Malilla (Sweden), Łódź (Poland) and Vojens (Denmark) will be allocated.
