U19 European Speedway Championship: Two young German riders have qualified

Two of the four German riders secured a place in the top eight in the two semi-final races in Plzeň and Debrecen, and will therefore compete in the final of the U19 European Championship in Krško, Slovenia. For Janek Konzack, this was already his second successful trip to Hungary, having won bronze there at the U24 European Championships on 1 May. The 16-year-old got off to a strong start with a race win and went on to score consistently with four second-place finishes, which ultimately meant fourth place overall. As he secured fewer race wins than Kacper Mania, the Pole finished third in the day’s standings behind William Cairns and Jacob Jensen. A play-off was needed to decide the final qualifying place, as Leo Klasson and Damirs Filimonovs were level on nine points. The Swede came out on top and secured the last place in the final. Carlos Gennerich, the second German in the field, managed only three points and was eliminated.

‘Almost a perfect day’ for Patrick Hyjek

Hannah Grunwald and Patrick Hyjek represented Germany in Pilsen, the Czech Republic. Whilst the only woman in the field was eliminated with just three points, Hyjek made it through to the final in fifth place. “The first three heats were almost perfect and I was briefly top of the standings,” Hyjek told SPEEDWEEK.com. “It was only in the last two heats that my starts didn’t quite work out, but I’ve achieved my main goal – I’m off to Krško for the final.” The podium was firmly in Polish hands: Bartosz Banbor took the win with 13 points, ahead of Maksymilian Pawelczak and Kevin Malkiewicz.
