Legality of the WINWARD Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 called into question

The result of the second race of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup at Misano remains provisional, as the post-race technical inspection of the WINWARD Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 driven by Lucas Auer and Maro Engel revealed some ambiguities that require further investigation.

The winning WRT BMW M4 GT3, the Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing car and the Mann-Filter Mamba from WINWARD Racing, which finished the race in the top three, were subjected to a more detailed inspection by the series’ technical delegates after the race. After the race, the cars were checked for weight, restrictors, ride height, tyres and aerodynamics, whilst the front and rear wheel bearings on the two Mercedes-AMG cars were also inspected.

Whilst the WRT car and the Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing car passed the inspection without any issues and complied with homologation and BoP regulations, uncertainties arose regarding the WINWARD Racing car.

The series’ technical delegate reported that the wheel bearings had been modified. The parts were subsequently confiscated and sealed for further inspection. Until this process is complete, the race result from the second GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup round at Misano remains provisional.
