Zontes ZT903-R: a mid-range three-cylinder roadster from China

Patent documents from China reveal a completely new naked bike, the Zontes ZT903-R. It is aimed at the performance roadster segment, competing with the Yamaha MT-09, Triumph Street Triple and Ducati Monster.

Chinese manufacturer Zontes is stepping up its game. Whilst the 703 series, featuring the company’s first in-house three-cylinder engine (699 cc, 95 PS), is just hitting the European market, the parent company Guangdong Tayo Motorcycle is already gearing up for the next stage of development.

Contrary to initial assumptions, the 903-R does not simply use a bored-out version of the familiar 703 engine. The drawings confirm a separate engine casing and a newly designed engine layout. Industry insiders in China are talking of a displacement of between 875 and 900 cc. Whilst the 703 engine, with its 95 PS, is precisely tailored to meet the A2 licence power-restriction requirements, the new triple is unashamedly aimed at maximum performance. Power figures of around 135 PS are being mooted, meaning Zontes is setting its sights directly on the Japanese and European competition in this segment.

Zontes is also pulling out all the stops when it comes to the chassis. The design is based on a newly developed cast aluminium main frame with a bolted-on rear subframe. The eye-catcher is a massive single-sided swingarm that guides the rear wheel. The exhaust system runs beneath the engine to a compact catalytic converter and terminates in two upward-pointing tailpipes directly beneath the seat.

There are signs of a change in the braking components: whilst the 703 models feature Nissin calipers, the detailed layouts of the 903-R suggest radially mounted monoblock four-piston calipers from Brembo. At the front is a generously sized USD telescopic fork, which, like the rear shock absorber, is likely to be fully adjustable.

The styling of the ZT 903-R is uncompromisingly angular. The front end is dominated by stacked LED lens headlights. The massive fuel tank is flanked by striking fairing elements that extend far forward, featuring integrated winglets designed to generate downforce at higher speeds. The rear end is extremely short and sleek. Handlebar-end mirrors, a large TFT colour display in the cockpit and adjustable footrests are just as much a part of the look as the sensor system of a standard quick-shifter for clutchless gear changes.

The fact that these drawings are by no means merely a design concept is demonstrated by details relevant to type approval, such as the mandatory side reflectors on the fork, the substantial exhaust manifold and the licence plate mount. Prototypes of the bike have already been spotted on public roads in China during test rides.

Zontes has not yet officially announced the ZT903-R. However, with the EICMA motorbike show in Milan just around the corner, Zontes could showcase the ZT903-R as a concept bike or near-production prototype at its stand in Italy. Series production and the market launch in Europe are likely to follow in the course of 2027 at the earliest.

It seems likely that further model variants based on the same technical platform will follow – such as a supersport bike (ZT903-RR?), a crossover bike (ZT903-T?) and a touring enduro (ZT903-F?). Should Tayo Motors maintain the aggressive pricing strategy of its smaller models, the ZT903-R could really shake up the market for high-performance mid-range roadsters.
