DTM Sachsenring: Red Bull Driftbrother Hountondji makes the Trabi smoke

Red Bull Driftbrother Elias Hountondji drifted around the East German circuit as part of the DTM support programme at the Sachsenring. And he did so in his special vehicle: a converted Trabant 601.

Elias Hountondji usually makes BMW racing cars with over 1,000 PS burn rubber, but on Sunday, ahead of the DTM race at the Sachsenring, the Red Bull Driftbrothers swapped their high-powered BMWs for a cult car from the GDR era: In a modified Trabant, the Ingolstadt-born driver put on a drift show for the large crowd of fans at the historic race track near Chemnitz.

Hountondji has been one of Europe’s top drift drivers for years and usually takes to the track in highly tuned BMW models such as the M4 Competition or the M2.

Spectators at the Sachsenring celebrated this unusual drift combination of ‘Ostalgie’ and motorsport. Elias Hountondji’s drift show wasn’t the only ‘Ostalgie’-themed event on the programme at the Sachsenring. On Saturday, the Red Bull Rennpappe – a Trabant rally – made a stop on the circuit and completed a lap of the track. In addition, the ADAC Historic Cup Ost took to the track with its ‘Ostalgie’-themed touring cars and formula cars as part of the DTM support programme.

Fans can also look forward to seeing the Red Bull Driftbrothers at the season finale in Hockenheim.
