Laurent Mekies on Max Verstappen after P2: “Who else does something like that?”

Max Verstappen’s 133rd podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix on the new Madring circuit in the capital, Madrid, was not necessarily expected ahead of the weekend. Verstappen defended second place like a lion against Lando Norris and drove home calmly.

Following the four-time world champion’s sixth podium finish of 2026, the French RBR team principal was full of praise: “That was yet another outstanding performance from Max. I don’t think we could have got much more out of this race; I mean, who else but Max could achieve such a result under these conditions?”

“Of course, we weren’t too happy at the start of the race when we were strongly urged to have Max drop back two places – actually just one, because of Hamilton – but at that point Antonelli was already between Max and Lewis, so it had to be two.”

“We thought: better to bite the bullet now and then, later on in what might be a turbulent race, have another chance to move back up the field.”

“Max showed great pace; once again, he drove flawlessly under intense pressure, resulting in a truly satisfying second place.”
