Formula E showdown in London: title race, farewells and a major shake-up

First of all, the latest title deciders at the London Indoor-Outdoor event at the ExCel exhibition centre on Saturday and Sunday (both at 16:05 CEST), where the series will be held for the final time: Competing for the Drivers’ World Championship title are Jake Dennis, who became world champion here in 2023, in his final race for Andretti with a Porsche-powered car on 146 points; the ‘eternal runner-up’ Mitch Evans, in his farewell race after ten years with Jaguar (144 points), and the 2024 champion, Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche, 141 points).

Mathematically, defending champion Olli Rowland (Nissan, 132 points), Edo Mortara (Mahindra, 116 points) and Porsche’s second works driver Antonio Felix da Costa (113 points) are also still in the running. In the team standings, the title is likely to be decided between Jaguar (257 points) and Porsche (243 points). In the manufacturers’ championship, Porsche (448 points) has all but secured the title against Jaguar (351 points).

Buemi (37), from western Switzerland, is wrapping up one of his three roles in London – alongside his work as a Toyota works driver in the WEC and as a simulator engineer at Red Bull Racing – after 158 races, with 14 wins and 36 podium finishes, as well as the title with Renault e-Dams in the second season of 2015/16. He has been involved in the electric series from the very start across all twelve seasons (1,150 points) and, ahead of his final outing with Envision-Jaguar, sits in 10th place in the World Championship. His potential successor at Envision is set to be Zak O’Sullivan. The second driver at Envision (which will retain its Jaguar power unit) will be the German-Austrian Max Günther, who is leaving DS Penske to replace Joel Eriksson.

Farewell gift from Lucas di Grassi

Lucas di Grassi has made a name for himself in several championships: the Brazilian, who turned 42 this week, was a key figure in Audi’s endurance racing successes (2012 to 2016) following a mediocre season in Formula 1 with Virgin (2010), but above all in Formula E, with 14 wins and 42 podium finishes in 163 races for Audi, Mahindra, Venturi and, most recently, Abt Lola-Yamaha, as well as the 2016/17 world championship title. With his surprise victory in the second Shanghai E-Prix a few weeks ago, he gave Abt – and himself – a veritable parting gift. He has scored a total of 1,109 points and is currently 17th in the World Championship.

Andretti announced several weeks ago that it would be switching to power unit partner Nissan for the upcoming Season 13 (Gen4). DS, the second Stellantis representative alongside Citroën, will be replaced by newcomer Opel from 2026/27. Théo Pourchaire, who competes for Peugeot in the WEC, will drive for Opel in Formula E and will have Mitch Evans as his team-mate. Whether Penske remains in Formula E depends on finding a powertrain partner. Lola will continue with Yamaha without Abt.
