Opel coup: Record-breaking Formula E winner Mitch Evans completes the line-up

Opel is making a bold statement ahead of its entry into the Formula E World Championship: Mitch Evans, the most successful driver in the series’ history, will compete for the Opel GSE Formula E Team from the 2026/27 season onwards. The 32-year-old New Zealander has racked up the most wins in the series with 16 victories and brings his experience from ten years in Formula E to the new German works team. Together with rookie Théo Pourchaire, Evans forms a combination of a top driver and a rising star, underpinning Opel’s ambition to compete at the front of the field right from the start.

“We’re heading into the season with our dream team. Mitch Evans was our first choice for the Opel GSE Formula E Team right from the start. Signing him once again underlines the seriousness of the entire project,” says Opel Motorsport Director and Team Principal Jörg Schrott. “We’ve already got to know Mitch both on and off the track as part of the Opel family. As well as his undisputed sporting excellence, he’s also a perfect fit for our team on a personal level. After so many years with another manufacturer, he has deliberately sought out a new challenge. Now Opel and Mitch are taking this next step together. In doing so, we are sending a clear message: we are entering the World Championship to compete at the very top.”

Evans himself is looking forward to the move and working with Opel: “I’m proud to be an Opel works driver and to be part of this new chapter in Formula E. It’s great that we can finally make this move official. After ten years with one manufacturer, it was time for me to take on a fresh challenge. With the move to the GEN4 generation, the perfect moment has arrived to start something new. I could tell straight away just how much energy and passion Opel is putting into the Formula E project. The team isn’t entering the series just to take part: Opel is here to win, and that’s exactly what I’m aiming for too.”

Following an exciting final weekend in London, Mitch Evans narrowly missed out on the first world championship title of his career, but he has once again underlined his exceptional status in Formula E. “The world championship title remains, quite clearly, my main goal; in that respect, I’ve still got a score to settle in Formula E. That’s precisely why the move to Opel feels like the right new challenge for me. Starting a new generation of Formula E with a new team and being successful straight away is anything but a given, but that’s exactly what appeals to me. I want to bring my ten years’ experience in Formula E to bear and, together with Opel and Théo, play a strong role in the World Championship.”

The completion of the driver line-up – which, alongside Evans and Pourchaire, also includes test and development driver Sophia Flörsch – marks Opel’s next step on the road to the Electric World Championship. In March, the Rüsselsheim-based manufacturer announced its involvement with the Opel GSE Formula E Team, followed by the world premiere of the GEN4 prototype in Le Castellet, France, and now the confirmation of the drivers. The next major milestone is coming up in the autumn, when Opel will unveil the final design of the new Opel GSE 27FE race car for the 2026/27 season at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October 2026, together with Evans and Pourchaire.
