Zweibrücken Grass Track: Strong British performance – ‘Silver Rose’ for James Shanes

James Shanes from England was the man of the day on the racecourse in the heart of Zweibrücken. Right from the first race, he found a fast line on the 650-metre-long grass track and only had to overtake his compatriot Max Perry once, after the first bend. In all the other heats, Shanes took the lead straight away in the first bend and ultimately won the day’s competition undefeated, ahead of the Dane Jacob Bukhave and Perry.

“Things have been going well for me in recent weeks; I’m using a new engine and at the moment everything’s working very well,” said Shanes, who also won the special race for the “Silver Rose of the City of Zweibrücken”, even though Bukhave briefly closed in on him. “I slowed down a little, and because the track was challenging, I didn’t want to make any silly mistakes. I was then able to pick up the pace again and keep Jacob at bay.”

In the international sidecar class, the field had been reduced to four, and from a German perspective, only one duo – Moritz Straub and David Kersten – were on the starting grid. The British pair Richard Webb and Anthony Goodwin had remained unbeaten in the early races; it was only in the final that the French duo Remi Valladon and Jonathan Bertrand managed to snatch a single point from the Englishmen. Straub secured a place on the podium in third place. “The field was quite strong; Richard Webb and Remi Valladon put in a good performance and deserved the top places,” said the rider from the Lake Constance region. “Of course, you always want to be further up the order, but we’re satisfied. The track was quite challenging and we all came through in one piece without any crashes. There was plenty on offer for the crowd across all classes, with something for everyone.”

Ramus was celebrated; Wehrle hasn’t lost his touch

In the national class, local hero Jeremias Ramus won again just a week after his maximum points victory in Berghaupten and was clearly the crowd’s favourite. The teenager from Blieskastel remained unbeaten in his heats and won comfortably ahead of Magnus Czekely and Louis Tebbe. In the national sidecar class, Oliver Wehrle – who is racing again this year after a long break – triumphed, remaining unbeaten ahead of the Kolb/Hillmann sidecar pair.
