Berghaupten: Victories for Martin Smolinski on the speedway and the grass track

The Race Days in Berghaupten kicked off with the speedway race on Saturday under floodlights. A quartet comprising Martin Smolinski, Lukas Fienhage, Steven Goret and Fabian Wachs lined up at the start for both the short speedway track and Sunday’s grass track race. Things went like clockwork for Smolinski, as the Olchingen rider remained unbeaten in both disciplines and claimed both winner’s trophies.

In the speedway race, Smolinski had won the first three heats when he came up against the young Hungarian Zoltan Lovas, who had also been unbeaten up to that point. Smolinski prevailed and went into the final with a perfect record, winning it ahead of the Frenchman Steven Goret and Lovas, which meant he finished the competition ahead of Lovas and Goret.

Smolinski dominated the field

On grass too, three-time world champion Smolinski coped admirably with the track, which was far from easy following the rain. By the end of the heats, he already had a two-point lead over his toughest rival, Lukas Fienhage, who finished second on the podium despite coming third in the final. “We all came through unscathed and there were no crashes,” Fienhage summed up in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com. “For the sidecar riders, it was a top-notch track for the European Championships, but for us solo riders, the track was very tough because it was difficult to get the motorbike through the bends as the surface was so deep. But in the end, I found a line and then it went reasonably well.”
