Nürburgring: Superbike title decider within Tulovic’s reach on Sunday

Mathematics in itself is already a challenge for some people, even without any complications. But when, as part of the calculations regarding the Euro Moto Superbike points standings, there are still protests and appeals pending – which are sitting on the DMSB’s desk and have not yet been officially decided – a disclaimer stating ‘subject to change’ should be added to the calculations regarding the championship title and the final league table.

Based on the current Euro Moto Superbike standings, Lukas Tulovic of Team Triple M Ducati Frankfurt cannot yet clinch the championship in the first Nürburgring race. Should he win, he will have a total of 227.5 points. Even if his closest rival, Marcel Schrötter of Team GERT56 by RS Speedbikes, were to retire and score zero points, the defending champion Tulovic would have a substantial lead of 71.5 points, he would still need a 75-point lead with three races remaining to be crowned champion for the second year running.

Mathematically speaking, alongside Marcel Schrötter, Twan Smits from Team Apreco, Markus Reiterberger from Team Masteroil-alpha-Van Zon-BMW and even Florian Alt from Team Holzhauer Racing Promotion still have a mathematical chance of winning the title. This means Tulovic will have a chance to clinch the title from Race 2 next Sunday at the earliest. However, a retirement in Race 1 or 2 would spoil his hopes of an early championship celebration. There will be even fewer ‘gifts’ handed out in the penultimate race than there were at the start of the season. Schrötter, Reiterberger and Alt, in particular, still have some catching up to do in terms of race wins and have no intention of handing the field over to Tulovic or Smits without a fight.
