Kawasaki drops the clutch: 2027 KLE500 with Smartride system

In the KLE500SE adventure enduro, Kawasaki offers the option of combining a conventional multi-plate clutch with a purely mechanical centrifugal clutch. Starting and stopping are carried out without a clutch lever.

The principle behind Kawasaki’s Smartride system is simple: the standard clutch assembly incorporates a centrifugal system which, much like on a scooter, automatically engages the clutch as the revs rise and disengages it again when the revs drop. In practical terms, this means that the clutch lever is not needed either for pulling away from a standstill or for stopping. Manually slipping the clutch to pull away is no longer necessary – a real relief in city traffic.

However, this system is not an automatic gearbox. Up-shifting and down-shifting are carried out as usual using the clutch lever and gear pedal. The system operates purely mechanically and without any electronic components.

Naturally, this gives off-road riders pause for thought. What happens if the revs drop sharply on an incline or a descent? Does the centrifugal clutch then cut out the drive, leaving you hurtling downhill without engine braking – possibly even in reverse? Only practical experience will tell.

The KLE500SE Smartride is the first model that Kawasaki is offering with the Smartride system as an option. It stands to reason that other models featuring the mid-range twin-cylinder engine will be fitted with it, such as the Z500, the Ninja 500 and the Eliminator 500.

The Smartride model variant is also fitted with tubeless wire-spoke wheels. The rear tyre size increases from 140/70-17 to 150/70-17, whilst the front tyre retains the off-road-suitable size of 90/90-21.

Otherwise, the technical specifications remain unchanged across all model variants: a 451 cc in-line twin engine, 45 PS at 9000 rpm and 42.6 Nm at 6000 rpm, a steel trellis frame, and off-road-suitable suspension components. Alongside the base model is the more extensively equipped SE variant, featuring a TFT colour display, hand guards, a taller windscreen and an aluminium engine guard, whilst the top-of-the-range model is the aforementioned SE Smartride.

Two edition packages are available for all three variants. The Rally Edition includes an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, a radiator cover, a low passenger seat and a USB-C port. The Adventure Tourer Edition is fitted with an engine guard and two side panniers, each with a capacity of 21 litres, including the corresponding mounting systems.

The 2027 Kawasaki KLE500 will be available from December 2026 in several trim levels, priced from €6,495 to €7,795 (excluding edition packages).
