Yamaha’s hope Toprak Razgatlioglu: Uncertainty on his 30th birthday

MotoGP hero Toprak Razgatlioglu celebrated his 30th birthday on Friday in his native Turkey – but on this special day he remained anxious about his injured shoulder and his participation in the Australian Grand Prix.

Whilst the MotoGP circus is taking a short break before heading off to the overseas triple-header of Australia, Malaysia and Qatar, Pramac Yamaha rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu has every reason to celebrate. The Turkish motorcycling superhero, three-time champion and MotoGP rookie turned 30 on Friday.

Born in the town of Alanya on the Turkish Riviera, Toprak caught the motorcycling bug from his father – a stuntman who died in an accident in 2017 . Known as ‘El Turco’ – the Turk – Razgatlioglu has built a reputation in the Superbike World Championship as a fearless, brilliant rider in one-on-one battles and has secured two world titles for BMW Motorrad. He has also become world-famous off the racetrack for his spectacular stunts on anything with wheels.

However, the festive mood surrounding his milestone birthday is likely to have faded somewhat for Toprak due to his rather mixed debut season in the premier class. The uncompetitive Yamaha M1 continues to make life difficult for the three-time Superbike World Champion on the track. His recent crashes in MotoGP have also taken their toll on the number 07 M1 rider.

Razgatlıoglu wrote the latest chapter in his difficult debut MotoGP season last Sunday in Indonesia. Following a heavy crash in FP2, he was forced to retire from the race at the Mandalika Circuit after just eight laps because he lacked the strength in his right shoulder, which had previously been dislocated. The question of whether he would be fit in time for the upcoming race at Phillip Island has so far remained unanswered. It is also unclear whether surgery will be necessary.

Unlike in previous years, Razgatlıoglu has nothing to lose in sporting terms. The World Championship standings show the Pramac rider in 21st place with 18 points. A full recovery, with an eye already on 2027, will be the top priority. Should ‘El Turco’ miss the Australian Grand Prix, Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernández is likely to step in.
