Moto2 qualifying: Izan Guevara on top, IntactGP duo in the top 5!

In sunny conditions and summery temperatures, the 27 Moto2 riders began qualifying for the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring on Friday afternoon. IntactGP rider Manuel Gonzalez had set the fastest time in the first free practice session that morning. The championship leader completed a lap of the 3.671-kilometre circuit in 1:22.483 minutes, putting him at the top of the timesheets ahead of Tony Arbolino and Senna Agius.

Forward rider Xabi Zurutuza, who had made a solid start by finishing 15th in the morning session, crashed right at the start of qualifying. The Spaniard’s Forward bike was damaged in the incident. Zurutuza was able to resume qualifying after a brief repair break.

Pramac rider Alberto Ferrandez had a nasty scare in Turn 7 shortly afterwards, but managed to avoid a crash. At the front, Pramac team-mate Izan Guevara set the pace in the early stages of the afternoon session. The World Championship runner-up led with a time of 1:22.260 and was marginally faster than Brno winner Ivan Ortola.

Personal bests, but no new track record

Manuel Gonzalez had to react quickly in Turn 3 when Jorge Navarro, riding ahead of him, hit a bump on the exit of the corner and subsequently eased off the throttle. Both Spaniards stayed on their bikes. Ahead of the final push for lap times, Izan Guevara remained in the lead.

In the final minutes, many riders set personal bests, but Guevara’s time remained unchallenged. A crash by Ajo rider Collin Veijer caused yellow flags to be waved in Turn 3. The bump at the exit of the long right-hand bend had claimed another victim.

Qualifying concluded with a Boscoscuro best time: Izan Guevara held on to the top spot ahead of Ivan Ortola. Behind them came Assen winner David Alonso and the IntactGP riders Senna Agius and Manuel Gonzalez. Filip Salac, Alex Escrig, Tony Arbolino, Deniz Öncü and Taiyo Furasato rounded off the top 10.

Joe Roberts, Dani Holgado, Mario Aji and Collin Veijer also qualified directly for Q2. Among those finishing outside the top 14 were Moto3 World Champion Jose-Antonio Rueda, Celestino Vietti and Aron Canet.
