In the Moto3 race in Hungary, David Munoz was battling for a podium place on the final lap. In the process, the front wheel of his KTM made contact with the rear wheel of Alvaro Carpe’s motorbike. The Intact rider crashed, taking rookie Brian Uriarte and Valentin Perrone down with him. In the process, Munoz was struck by the Argentine’s bike. The result: a broken hip.

Munoz underwent surgery on Sunday immediately after the race in Hungary. On Thursday, he was able to make the journey home to Spain. “David was airlifted from Budapest to Barcelona in an air ambulance,” Intact team manager Peter Öttl told SPEEDWEEK.com. “He had to have surgery in Hungary; there was no time to wait.”

The injury David Munoz sustained is not a minor one. “He broke three different bones in his hip, all on the left side. The whole thing was fixed with a screw,” reported Öttl. Munoz has since been examined at the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona. “Dr Cardenas, who specialises in hip injuries, is looking after him there. He’s in good hands.”

The result of the examination in Barcelona is that no further surgery will be required. Experience suggests that the recovery time for such an injury is around three months – depending on how the healing progresses. This is a setback for both Munoz and the Intact team. A replacement rider has been found for the Czech Grand Prix in Brno, which takes place from 19 to 21 June, as well as for the race weekend in Assen. Marcos Uriarte will take the reins of the KTM in place of Muñoz. The Spaniard had already stepped in for Intact GP in Austin, finishing 14th at the US Grand Prix.

David Muñoz’s ordeal over the past few months has been a long one. He broke his thigh in a crash through no fault of his own at the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix. After several operations over the winter, he fought his way back. During the pre-season tests in Portimão and Jerez, he was still experiencing pain in his leg. In the week before his departure for Thailand, Muñoz had to undergo further surgery on his left leg. Nevertheless, he competed in the first race at Buriram and finished tenth. Due to further complications, Munoz missed the Grands Prix in Brazil and the USA. In Jerez, the 2025 World Championship runner-up made his comeback and made it onto the podium straight away. At Le Mans, Barcelona and Mugello, the 20-year-old finished 17th, 3rd and 7th respectively. His next serious injury then occurred at the Balaton Park Circuit.

Munoz currently sits eighth in the World Championship standings with 52 points. His Intact team-mate David Almansa is in fourth place.
