Camden Mc Lellan (Triumph) wins MX2 qualifying race ahead of Simon Längenfelder

Qualifying race for the Grand Prix of Flanders on the deep sand at Lommel: South African Triumph works rider Camden Mc Lellan was fastest in qualifying and started from pole. Defending champion Simon Längenfelder was 1.38 seconds slower on his fastest lap and started from second place.

Holeshot: Längenfelder

Simon Längenfelder took the holeshot and led the race for 8 laps. Camden Mc Lellan started in the top five, gradually worked his way up the field and overtook the German with relative ease. Mc Lellan eventually won by a margin of 8.3 seconds ahead of Längenfelder and World Championship leader Guillem Farres (Triumph), who capitalised on the mistakes of the others.

3 crashes for Sacha Coenen

Belgian Red Bull KTM factory rider Sacha Coenen got off to a good start and was running in second place behind Simon Längenfelder for the first four laps. A crash in a right-hand bend bent his handlebars, leading to two further crashes. He had also started the race with a broken collarbone – which he had sustained in the USA – that had been operated on but had not yet fully healed. Following his third crash, World Championship leader Guillem Farres inherited third place without a fight. Liam Everts (Husqvarna) also crashed twice and eventually finished in fifth place.

What else happened

Janis Reisulis (Yamaha) started on the first lap and staged a comeback to finish in sixth place. German KTM rider Valentin Kees finished in 13th place. Joshua Voelker (KTM), in 22nd place, was already a lap down. Dutch guest rider and WMX World Champion Lotte van Drunen (Yamaha) finished the race in 23rd place.

World Championship leader Guillem Farres extended his lead in the World Championship standings from 33 to 34 points. Camden Mc Lellan, in third place, increased his lead over Simon Längenfelder by one point.
