A quick sign of life: Leo Rammerstorfer shook up FP1 at Misano

Honda rider Leo Rammerstorfer surprised everyone in the first Moto3 session at Misano with a flawless ride in difficult conditions. The rookie made the most of his status and went all out despite the tricky conditions at the Misano World Circuit. It had rained again overnight on the Adriatic coast. Although the sun was shining in the morning, by the time the youngsters took to the track, the circuit was still largely wet – with only the racing line drying out in places.

Just how challenging the conditions were was also evident from the fact that World Championship leader Maximo Quiles decided against taking part in the session. Watching from the pits in a T-shirt, Maximo Quiles saw Rammerstorfer take the lead in FP1 during the final stages. Just under ten minutes before the chequered flag, the SIC rider snatched P1 from his brand-mate Veda Pratama. The rookie from near Linz then extended his lead to as much as two seconds at times.

In the final two minutes, lap times continued to drop, and Australian Joel Kelso was half a second faster than Leo Rammerstorfer. With a time of 1:46.566, the Austrian secured a strong second place ahead of Adrian. Notably, with O’Gorman and Carraro in the next positions, the session was firmly in the hands of the Honda riders. By way of comparison, Kelso’s fastest time was five seconds slower than a top Moto3 time on a completely dry track.
