Date announcement: The new MotoGP era begins on 7 March 2027 in Thailand!

MotoGP is using the 2026 summer break to finalise the 2027 race calendar – and to announce the official start date of the extraordinary, if not revolutionary, 2027 MotoGP season. One thing is certain: Round 1 of the new 850cc era will take place from 5 to 7 March 2027 – meaning the Thai Grand Prix at the Chang International Circuit will, as in the past two years, mark the opening round of the FIM Road Racing World Championship, which is scheduled to comprise 22 events. The 2027 Thai Grand Prix will be the first event to be held under the new MotoGP technical regulations for the 2027–2031 period.

It comes as no surprise that the 2027 season will also kick off in Thailand. Buriram has established itself as a crowd-puller on the MotoGP calendar. At this year’s season opener, Marco Bezzecchi celebrated victory in front of a record crowd, with 228,228 spectators flooding the venue.

Following the announcement, the CEO of the newly formed MotoGP Group was keen to emphasise the importance of this season opener. Carmelo Ezpeleta: “The fact that we are hosting the MotoGP season opener for the third year running is testament to the excellent partnership we have built in Thailand and to the incredible passion of the fans.”

The mastermind behind MotoGP added in his message: “Buriram has consistently delivered one of the best events on our calendar, making it the perfect venue to herald the new technical era of MotoGP. The first race under the 2027 regulations will mark the start of an exciting new chapter for our sport, and we are delighted to begin this journey in Thailand.”

The opening round is thus confirmed. Immediately following the Thai Grand Prix, there could already be deviations from the 2026 schedule. For one thing is certain: Buenos Aires will be added as a second South American spectacle. Whether the races in Argentina will be scheduled before or after the Brazilian Grand Prix remains to be seen. The US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, is also confirmed. Whether the series will then head to Europe or, as was the case in 2025, to the desert of Qatar is unclear against the backdrop of the raging military conflict in the region. As recently reported on SPEEDEEEK.com, the 2027 Hungarian Grand Prix is likely to be dropped from the calendar. Dates for all other venues are still to be confirmed.
