Gresini confirms: Superbike rider Iker Lecuona to replace Aldeguer at Silverstone

There had been plenty of indications that Gresini Racing would be fielding its regular line-up of Alex Márquez and Fermin Aldeguer for the British Grand Prix, but as Nadia Padovani’s team confirmed a week before the event, Aldeguer will also have to sit out the 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship at Silverstone. This makes it clear that the back injury sustained by last year’s best rookie during his crash at Assen is proving to be more protracted than expected. A full two months will then have passed between the crash in the Netherlands and his return.

According to the team’s statement, the decision was made to extend the injured Spaniard’s break for safety reasons. The Spanish rider will take a break as a precaution. However, Aldeguer has received medical clearance to resume training from 15 August, with a view to rejoining his team for the Aragon GP. From the team’s perspective, this is understandable – as his position in the World Championship standings (currently 11th) has taken a back seat due to the injury and his absence from three MotoGP weekends.

On the sporting front, Gresini has a top-class solution ready. Iker Lecuona, who stepped in for Alex Márquez in Hungary and impressed with a 7th-place finish in the Grand Prix, will now take over the Ducati with start number 54. The Ducati factory rider’s participation is made possible by the extended break in the Superbike World Championship.
