MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring: How to make your journey stress-free

On 19 and 20 September, tens of thousands of motorbike fans will once again flock to the Red Bull Ring. During the MotoGP weekend in Spielberg, increased traffic is therefore to be expected, particularly during peak times. The organiser recommends that visitors plan their journey well in advance – and, where possible, opt for travel by bus, train or bicycle.

Inter-regional bus transfers offer a particularly convenient option. On Saturday and Sunday, services will run from several Austrian federal states. Pick-up points include Salzburg, Carinthia and Styria, amongst others.

The train is also a good option for the journey. The destination is Knittelfeld station, which can be reached from various parts of Austria by ÖBB trains. From there, free shuttle buses run to the Red Bull Ring.

Another alternative is to combine travelling by car and bicycle. A ‘Park & Bike’ car park is available at the Fohnsdorf thermal spa. Visitors can park their cars there and cycle the final few kilometres on their own bikes. This is a particularly good way to avoid potential traffic jams around Spielberg, especially during peak times.

Free parking for motorists

Anyone travelling by car should set off as early as possible. The car parks open an hour before the event site opens. The police and stewards will direct visitors to the nearest available car park depending on their route.

The standard car parks are free of charge, are within walking distance of the Red Bull Ring and do not need to be booked in advance. The organiser advises visitors to note down the car park number signposted at the entrance – this makes it easier to find your car after a long day at the races.

In addition, a limited number of paid parking spaces are available opposite the event site. These are situated within the accredited area and, as well as having their own access route, offer a particularly short walk to the circuit.

When leaving, visitors should also ensure they follow the signage and the instructions of the police and stewards. The traffic management plan is designed to direct vehicles from the individual car parks away separately wherever possible. Nevertheless, longer waiting times are to be expected, particularly on Sunday after the MotoGP race.

Travelling to the Red Bull Ring by motorbike

For many fans, travelling on two wheels is part of the Austrian GP experience. Motorcyclists can use alternative routes to the A9 and S36. Coming from the north, the route via the Triebener Tauern is a good option; from the south, routes leading to Spielberg include those via the Gaberl or the Obdacher Sattel.

Near P4 there is a central motorbike car park, which is free to use and just a few minutes’ walk from the event site.

Praktisch: Biker Garderobe

The biker lockers provided are handy for motorcyclists. Here, helmets, leather suits and other equipment can be stored in a box measuring 50 x 40 x 40 cm. The cost is 15 euros per day or 35 euros for the whole weekend. Card payments are accepted.

The biker lockers are open on Thursday from 12 noon to 8 pm, on Friday and Saturday from 7.30 am to 10 pm, and on Sunday from 6.30 am to 6 pm. This service isn’t limited to motorcyclists: other visitors can also use the lockers to store larger bags or suitcases, for example.

Campers should arrive particularly early

Anyone wishing to enjoy the full MotoGP experience at one of the campsites around the Red Bull Ring should arrive as early as possible, ideally on Wednesday or Thursday. Arrival is possible throughout the day on both days.

On Friday and Saturday, it is strongly recommended that you arrive by 9.00 am at the latest. Anyone arriving later should expect delays and possible diversions. From Thursday onwards, campers on the S36 Murtal Expressway will also be guided to the respective camping areas by LED signs.

For the Pink, Turquoise, Orange, Green, Violet, Yellow and White campsites, the Knittelfeld West exit is recommended. Visitors to the Blue, Red and Beige areas, on the other hand, should leave the S36 at Zeltweg West.

For Sunday, the organiser recommends that campers do not leave until 8 pm. This is to avoid the heavy traffic immediately following the Grand Prix.

Whether by car, motorbike, bus, train or bicycle: the most important advice for the MotoGP weekend in Spielberg remains to arrive as early as possible. Those who plan their route before setting off and follow the on-site guidance will have the best chance of starting race day not in a traffic jam, but at the circuit in good time.
