Ted and Vincent Peugeot: Years of hard work rewarded with second place

For the third weekend of the Sidecar World Championship at the French circuit in Pau Arnos, local heroes Ted and Vincent Peugeot were tipped to have a good chance of finally securing a long-overdue top-three finish. However, instead of competing at the front of the field, they had to pack up before the second free practice session because all their fuel had run out.

After the summer break, the multiple German and French sidecar champions returned to form in Italy. As the 3.768-kilometre circuit in Italy was included in the World Championship calendar for the first time, the duo – with the son as rider and the father as passenger – prepared meticulously for the races.

“We liked the layout of Cremona straight away. We were immediately in the groove during the first private practice session on Thursday because we’d analysed the track in detail using on-board videos. We then finished the session in second place,” said the 23-year-old.

Following a technical problem, they were only able to complete two laps in the first free practice session. In the second free practice session, the Seventy-Four Racing team turned heads with a fourth-place finish behind the defending champions Sam and Tom Christie, Markus Schlosser/Lucas Krieg and Pekka Päivärinta/Adam Christie.

After finishing third in qualifying, it looked as though they might secure their first top-three finish in the World Championship this time round. In the sprint race, they managed to hold on to third place behind Harry Payne/Kevin Rousseau and the Christie brothers until the fourth lap, but in the end Päivärinta/Christie snatched that spot from them.

In the main race, the French pair not only held on to third place after the start, but – with Päivärinta/Christie hot on their heels in sweltering heat – even made life difficult for Christie/Christie. When the leading pair, Payne/Rousseau, began to overheat just a few laps before the chequered flag, the race was concluded in that order behind the safety car.

Second place rewarded their years of hard work in the Sidecar World Championship. Ahead of the next, penultimate World Championship weekend at Assen (19 and 20 September) – the finale takes place on 3 and 4 October in Oschersleben – the Peugeots occupy fifth place in the provisional standings, just 21.5 points behind the fourth-placed pair, Schlosser/Krieg.
