Speedway: Leon Madsen is Danish Champion – Jakobsen secures wildcard

The Granly Speedway Arena in Esbjerg hosted the Danish Championship, with Leon Madsen competing for the first time since 2022. In his first heat, the 37-year-old conceded points to Frederik Jakobsen and Jonas Knudsen. As these points carried over from the heats into the final of the top four, every point counted.

In Heat 16, Madsen lost another point to his GP colleague Michael Jepsen Jensen; both went into the final as leaders with 12 points from the heats. They were joined by Frederik Jakobsen and Anders Thomsen, who had 11 points each, whilst Mikkel Michelsen, Nicolai Klindt and Jonas Seifert-Salk all had 10 points to their name.

After the start of the final, Madsen and Jepsen Jensen were languishing at the back of the field. Whilst Jepsen Jensen could only overtake Thomsen to finish third, Madsen fought his way up to the front. First, the veteran overtook Thomsen, and on the final lap he also overtook Jakobsen. It was then confirmed: Madsen, the multiple GP winner and former world championship runner-up, has become Danish champion for the first time at the age of 37! As runner-up and the highest-placed non-GP rider, Jakobsen secured the one-day wildcard for the Danish Grand Prix in Vojens this September.
