German Speedway Championship in Brokstedt: Kevin Wölbert prevails in three-way play-off

As expected, Kai Huckenbeck, Kevin Wölbert and Norick Blödorn were the strongest riders in the second final race of the German Speedway Championship in Brokstedt, and they gave each other no quarter.

MSC Brokstedt hosted an eventful day of racing, though due to the hot summer weather, they were only able to welcome around 300 spectators to the second final of the German Speedway Championship. Nevertheless, the club provided a superbly prepared track with very little dust, and spectators were also supplied with free water. From a sporting perspective, compared to the season opener in Herxheim, the riders who were competing in the SGP2 qualifiers were absent, and Erik Riss and Ben Iken were also injured. It was therefore clear that Norick Blödorn and Kevin Wölbert, who had taken the top two places in Herxheim, were the favourites; they were joined by Kai Huckenbeck, who had missed the event in the Palatinate due to commitments in Poland.

It came down to the wire at the end of the race, as it was only in the penultimate heat that it became clear there would be a run-off for the day’s victory. After Huckenbeck had beaten Wölbert in the first heat, the rider from Werl conceded a point to Blödorn in the following heat. In the 19th heat, the hitherto unbeaten Blödorn faced Wölbert, and the rider from Heidhof managed to overtake Blödorn – who’d got off to a better start – on the outside at the start of the second lap, meaning the top three finished the race with 14 points each.

The run-off was the showdown: Blödorn ran out of steam straight after the start, whilst Wölbert took the lead. Huckenbeck, however, stayed right on the leader’s tail for the entire race; during a final attack in the final bend, he even grazed the barrier, but Wölbert crossed the line first ahead of Huckenbeck.

The third of five final races will take place on 3 July in Güstrow.
