Xavier Vierge (29) saved the day for Yamaha at Magny-Cours

Although neither Xavier Vierge nor Yamaha are satisfied with the results, the Spaniard was the most impressive of the Yamaha riders at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. Whether finishing ninth in Superpole or in 10th and 8th place in the feature races – it was the 29-year-old who achieved the best results. Only in the Superpole Race did Remy Gardner come out on top in eighth place – Vierge crossed the finish line in ninth position, 0.373 seconds behind the Australian.

“I think we did a solid job on Saturday. Qualifying went well, and it’s always an advantage to start the race from the first three rows,” said Vierge, emphasising the importance of Superpole. “For the first race, we made a small change to the set-up. However, this caused a problem that I hadn’t experienced all weekend – on a positive note, though, the bike ran really well after the race was stopped. We changed the set-up again, and I felt a bit better at the restart, even though we know there’s still work to be done if we’re to compete right at the front.”

Looking at the overall standings, it’s clear that after a temporary dip in form, Vierge has been on the up since Donington Park and is now just eight points behind team frontrunner Andrea Locatelli. The Italian scored just four points in France, whilst the Spaniard picked up 15.

“We worked really well together throughout the weekend, constantly looking for small improvements, and in the second race the bike felt better than at any point this weekend – and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for,” said Vierge, delighted with the progress. “We’re still a bit behind the riders at the front, but we need to focus on ourselves, and I think we’ve done a good job: two races in the top nine is a positive result that we can take forward.”

In preparation for the round at Cremona (25–27 September), Yamaha will hold a test session at the Italian circuit. “It’ll be an important test day – hopefully the weather will be on our side so we can make the most of it and prepare well for the next round,” said Vierge.
