Now official: Yamaha and Xavier Vierge (29) are parting ways

For regular readers of SPEEDWEEK.com, it comes as no surprise that the partnership between Yamaha and Xavi Vierge is coming to an end after just one season. The Japanese manufacturer officially confirmed this on Tuesday morning. The Spaniard had only a contract for the 2026 Superbike World Championship, which will not be renewed.

The fact that they are parting ways is down to neither Vierge’s performance nor his personality, as Pata-Maxus team boss Paul Denning emphasises. “For me personally – and I speak for every single team member – it is very regrettable that we cannot continue our partnership with Xavi into the 2027 season,” said the Englishman. “Given how quickly he adapted to the R1, as well as his tremendous speed, his courage and his technical understanding, we are not only losing an outstanding rider, but also a very special person.”

The 29-year-old moved to Yamaha after four years with Honda and slotted seamlessly into the team. “It is rare for someone to be so well-liked and highly regarded by everyone they come into contact with. Yet Xavi stands out for his exceptional level of professionalism, honesty and respect for his work and those around him,” praised Denning. “We wholeheartedly wish him all the best – which he undoubtedly deserves – and assure him that our team’s door will always be open for future opportunities. Vamos Xavi – and thank you.”

So why the split? The answer lies in the MotoGP paddock. Yamaha wanted to offer Pramac rider Jack Miller a chance in the World Superbike Championship, and Vierge was the only rider whose contract was due to expire. The Australian’s move has not yet been officially confirmed.

Vierge, for his part, is landing on his feet. The Catalan is set to sign for the Ducati Barni Racing team as Alvaro Bautista’s successor. So, whilst he will no longer be a factory rider in 2027, he will have the more competitive Ducati V4R at his disposal.
