Huge deal for Triumph: 2027 SSP World Championship with two-time champion Domi Aegerter

Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter is the most successful rider still competing in the Supersport World Championship. Following a very difficult year with Kawasaki, he is making a fresh start with Team PTR Triumph in 2027.

The Turkish rider Kenan Sofuoglu tops the two most important statistics in the Supersport World Championship with five titles and 43 wins. Although he has only competed in this class for three years so far, Dominique Aegerter is number two with two titles and 27 wins. Apart from the two mentioned above, only the Frenchman Sébastien Charpentier and the Australian Andrew Pitt have managed to secure two titles; however, with 12 and 7 wins respectively, they lag significantly behind. Unlike Aegerter, however, these three experts each only had one race per weekend.

As reported by SPEEDWEEK.com on 27 October, Aegerter has signed with Team PTR Triumph – led by former 500cc World Championship rider Simon Buckmaster – for 2027. This is a huge deal for both the Englishman and the Triumph brand: never before have they had such a successful rider under contract!

The goals for next season are clear: Triumph wants to take the final step to the top with the new Street Triple 798. And Aegerter is keen to build on his previous successes in the middleweight class after four difficult seasons. His three years with Yamaha in the World Superbike Championship were mixed – injuries, illness and the underpowered R1 held him back. And on his return to the Supersport World Championship this year with the Kawasaki works team, the veteran took longer than expected to settle in – it wasn’t until the season finale in Jerez that he secured his only podium finish.

They’ve got a great package – I hope it suits me.

“I’m relieved to have secured my future and to be continuing in top-level racing in 2027,” said Aegerter. “I’m delighted to have signed a contract with the PTR Triumph Racing Team, led by Simon Buckmaster. I’m very happy to continue competing in the Supersport World Championship with a professional team. I’ve known Simon for a long time from the paddock; we were in touch a few times when he was still racing for another manufacturer. I’m looking forward to the new season and also to the first test on the Triumph bike. They’ve got a great package, so I hope it suits me. Over the winter, I’ll be giving it my all, both in training sessions on the bike and in the gym, to improve my physical condition even further and prepare myself mentally as well.”

Triumph: Aiming for the World Championship title with Domi Aegerter

The team owner is also delighted: “It’s fantastic for us to announce the signing of Domi Aegerter, as we’ll be continuing as a Triumph-supported team with the new Street Triple 798 RS. We’ll also be carrying out a comparative test with our current, championship-winning race bike at the start to ensure we have the best possible chance of success with a winning package when the season kicks off in Australia. As we know, Domi is one of the most successful riders in the Supersport World Championship and has regained his form on the Kawasaki towards the end of the season. We’re looking forward to building on that, taking that final step and competing for the world championship. We know we have the staff; we know we have the team and the support structure – and now, with Domi, we also have the right rider. It’s up to us to work together as a great team to make this a reality in 2027.”

Aegerter’s team-mate will be the talented 21-year-old Briton Joshua Whatley, who achieved his best World Championship result to date – sixth place – in the opening race at Magny-Cours in early September 2026.
