From the command centre to the cockpit: DTM team boss Gottfried Grasser (47/AUT) is returning to the ADAC GT Masters after 13 years – as a driver. The 47-year-old will be racing a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo 2 with his GRT Grasser Racing Team. Gerhard Tweraser (37/AUT) will be at the wheel alongside him. The duo will make two guest appearances as part of the Int. Shell ADAC Truck Grand Prix at the Nürburgring (10 to 12 July) and at the Salzburgring (4 to 6 September).

The GRT Grasser Racing Team last competed in the ADAC GT Masters in 2024 and spent a total of 13 years in the ADAC’s GT3 junior series. Gottfried Grasser last raced at the Red Bull Ring in 2013 and is now returning to the cockpit. The idea was conceived in 2025 together with his good friend and team-mate Tweraser. “After ten years, the Huracán was retired and I kept one of the cars for myself. It was just sitting at home and the cellar was full of spare parts,” laughed Grasser. “So we decided to do a few casual test sessions over the course of the year. It became more and more fun, and the next step was to pull out the calendar and see when the ADAC GT Masters wasn’t running alongside the DTM. That sealed the decision, especially with the home race at the Salzburgring.”

Team-mate Gerhard Tweraser has also been competing in the ADAC GT Masters since 2012. The Austrian has contested a total of 36 races and has regularly lined up for the GRT Grasser Racing Team. Most recently, in 2025, he competed as a guest driver at the Red Bull Ring in a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo 1. Ahead of the Nürburgring weekend as part of the ADAC Truck Grand Prix, there will be a test session on Thursday, which Grasser and Tweraser will be taking part in. It was at this very venue that Grasser made his ADAC GT Masters debut in 2011, driving a powerful Dodge Viper. However, following a technical fault in practice, his weekend came to a premature end 15 years ago; he is now hoping for better luck on his comeback. “I’ve got the heart of a racer – I realised that even during the test days. I was chipping away at the tenths and constantly trying to improve,” the 47-year-old admits honestly. “We also have a very mature car in the Huracán, which has enjoyed a great deal of success and can compete at the front – that’s a superb foundation. We didn’t have that in 2013; back then, it was rather of a struggle.”

The Austrian has been competing in the DTM with his GRT Grasser Racing Team since 2022 and has been fielding the Lamborghini Temerario GT3 since this season. Whilst he pulls the strings as team principal and urges his drivers to exercise caution, he finds this harder to do when he’s in the cockpit himself. “It’s always the same: as soon as I put my helmet on, I’m the racing driver. The team principal who thinks about parts or costs takes a break,” laughs Grasser. “It’s an incredible challenge, but it’s also a lot of fun. Racing is a world of its own and pushes you to the limit in every respect. The sport exerts a brutal fascination. Seeing it from the other side again does me a world of good as team principal.”

For Grasser, however, returning to the cockpit after 13 years isn’t just about fun; it’s also a serious task that he approaches with respect. “For me, the biggest challenge will be the battles with the other cars. I’m still a bit nervous about that, as I haven’t done it for a long time,” reveals the 47-year-old, who will be competing alongside Tweraser in the Pro-AM class.

He also doesn’t rule out returning to the ADAC GT Masters as team principal in the future, though only with the new Lamborghini Temerario GT3. “We’ve still got a few issues to sort out with this car at the moment and it’s a long road ahead, but I can definitely see myself returning in the future,” says Grasser. “I absolutely love the series and its format. The mix of young drivers and old hands like me adds a lot of spice and excitement. And the atmosphere is just right.”
