Change to the LMGT3 class team standings in the FIA WEC from 2027

In the team standings for the smaller LMGT3 class of the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), two cars per team will now be counted from the upcoming 2027 season onwards. Until now, points have been awarded per individual car.

As is well known, the FIA WEC consists of two classes. Alongside the Hypercars, which compete amongst themselves for overall victory in the races, the LMGT3 cars also compete in the World Endurance Championship. The nine manufacturers – Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche – are each represented by two cars on the grid. For the coming season, however, there will be a new system in the LMGT3 class for how points are awarded in the team standings.

Under the new rules, the results of two cars per team competing under the same entry will always be combined. Currently, each car is still scored individually. With this change, the regulations committee aims to place even greater emphasis on overall team performance. A similar rule has been in place in the Hypercar class since 2025. There, too, both cars are combined in the manufacturers’ championship.

Looking at the current 2026 season, it is noticeable that in the LMGT3 class, one team is in fact responsible for fielding both cars per make. Consequently, the change for the teams will not be particularly significant with regard to 2027. Only in the Porsche and Corvette camps will the two cars (although fielded by the same team) be entered under slightly different team names.

In 2026, the two Corvettes will compete as ‘Racing Team Turkey by TF’ and ‘TF Sport’. The Porsches will compete in 2026 as ‘Manthey DK Engineering’ and as ‘The Bend Manthey’. It will be interesting to see whether both teams opt for a uniform designation in their entries for 2027.
