This weekend, Formula 1 stops off at the longest circuit of the season. At 7.004 kilometres, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is a record-breaking track – though it is likely to pose a particular challenge this year.
ServusTV will be broadcasting the race weekend for Formula 1 fans in Austria. Ahead of the race weekend in Belgium, ServusTV expert and former F1 driver Christian Klien explains: “Energy management takes some of the fun out of it. Spa has similar track characteristics to Silverstone. Because it’s so fast and flowing, you’re constantly recharging the battery and 30 km/h slower than before.” On a circuit with so many full-throttle sections, it will therefore be a challenge for the drivers to recharge their batteries; this is likely to be particularly noticeable in qualifying.
Mercedes versus Ferrari at Spa too?
As far as the balance of power on the track is concerned, Klien sees another duel between championship leaders Mercedes and their closest rivals Ferrari: “Mercedes, however, have been struggling with technical problems all season, whilst Ferrari, on the other hand, are on the up.”
Klien: “Red Bull may have a strong internal combustion engine, but they’ve got some catching up to do in energy management. If they don’t find a solution, it’ll be another difficult weekend. And McLaren are a bit under the radar at the moment, but they’re bringing an upgrade now.” The Papaya team is bringing a new rear wing and the engine upgrade already used by the works team and the two other customer teams.
RTL to broadcast another race
A special treat for German Formula 1 fans this Belgian Grand Prix weekend: the commercial broadcaster RTL will be broadcasting qualifying and the race free-to-air, alongside Sky’s pay-TV coverage.
