BMW Head of Engineering Gonschor after the Donington flop: “We let ourselves be misled”

Following the previous test at Donington Park, BMW had hoped for more than 11th place as their best result in the Superbike World Championship in England. The propeller-badged manufacturer has a lot of work ahead of it.

There are nearly eight weeks of the summer break to go before the Superbike World Championship enters the final third of the season at the Magny-Cours Circuit in central France in early September. At BMW, the holidays are likely to be a short affair; following the flop at Donington Park, work on the M1000RR is piling up.

In the previous two years, BMW had secured six consecutive victories with Toprak Razgatlioglu on the picturesque circuit; last weekend, Miguel Oliveira finished 11th, 20th and 12th, whilst the recovering Danilo Petrucci came 15th, 19th and 15th. These results are all the more bitter when you consider that BMW were testing at Donington at the end of June.

Expectations were not met

“Both the riders and the team left the legendary circuit disappointed this year,” said Technical Director Chris Gonschor, summing up the weekend in England. “We were unable to meet the expectations we had set ourselves. The test here beforehand misled us somewhat, rather than helping to improve performance. On top of that, there were further unfortunate circumstances, such as Miguel’s crash in qualifying. Furthermore, the reduced fuel flow rate – which we were granted following our 2025 World Championship victory – is clearly having an impact compared to our Japanese rivals. This has made our efforts to catch up in the races even more difficult, although our race pace is actually encouraging. After all, we were faster here too than we were last year.”

For the Bochum-born rider, one thing is clear: “The results speak for themselves. That’s why we’ll be using the summer break for intensive testing so that we can provide our riders with a competitive motorbike again at Magny-Cours. Now it’s time to recharge our batteries so that we can go all out again in the remaining races and demonstrate the potential of the BMW M1000RR.”

As well as the test at Magny-Cours, another is planned at Estoril – both circuits on which Oliveira has never raced at World Championship level.
