After the penalty: Here’s the starting grid for the Silverstone Grand Prix

Qualifying at the Silverstone Circuit had an aftermath. During the first segment of qualifying, the Aston Martin team and Lance Stroll were annoyed by Pierre Gasly, who got in the Canadian’s way at Turn 15. The Frenchman had to report to the stewards alongside Stroll to explain himself. The Alpine driver reported that he had no radio contact at that moment.

He was busy testing the radio, and the Alpine team emphasised that the radio problems were down to the equipment provided by Formula 1 itself, which was also confirmed by Formula 1. Aston Martin acknowledged that the circumstances were unfortunate. However, this was not a reason for the stewards to refrain from imposing a penalty.

They argued that, despite the lack of a warning over the radio, Gasly had all the necessary information to know that Stroll was closing in fast. Nevertheless, he was travelling slowly on the racing line, which is why he was handed a three-place grid penalty. As a result, the 30-year-old drops from twelfth to fifteenth on the grid.
