Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) speaks out: “I want to set the record straight”

Following the race in Madrid at the weekend, rumours were rife in the Italian media: Lewis Hamilton is said to have demanded that certain ‘key figures’ – as the Corriere della Sera, for example, put it rather cautiously – be replaced within his team. Furthermore, his relationship with team principal Fred Vasseur is reportedly no longer what it used to be. Media turmoil following a race that did not go to plan – that is par for the course at Ferrari. After all, the Scuderia initially looked strong in practice at Madrid, but then Lewis Hamilton retired from the Grand Prix with a brake failure and Charles Leclerc missed out on the podium, finishing fourth.

Lewis Hamilton has now responded to the rumours about the alleged demand for personnel changes with clear words on his social media channels. On Thursday, the seven-time world champion shared an Instagram Story in which he set out his view of the situation.

In it, Hamilton writes: “I’ve seen some of the reports that have been published and would like to set the record straight here. I have never asked for anyone on my team to be replaced. Everyone I work with gives their best every day, and it is their commitment that drives us forward.”

The Briton continued: “I always try to empower and encourage people so that they can get the best out of themselves, or at least recognise the best within themselves. I may not always succeed, but that is my intention and exactly why I am here. We’re all working together, and that’s how it will stay.”

Hamilton is therefore clearly standing by his team in public – and against the reports that circulated after the race. Incidentally, he posted these words on his Instagram Story alongside a group photo of his team – in the centre, almost lost amongst the sea of red shirts, surrounded by all the engineers and mechanics, Hamilton sits right in the middle of his crew.
