Chaz Davies: From a fighter on the track to a coach behind the scenes

Behind the scenes in the paddock of the MotoGP and Superbike World Championships, there’s plenty of interesting activity going on. In recent years, the field of coaching has continued to evolve. One of the consultants working with riders and teams is Chaz Davies and his crew. The 39-year-old has now built up a very extensive client base. One of his protégés is Senna Agius, who lives in Andorra, from the Liqui Moly Dynavolt IntactGP Moto2 team. Davies also advises the Agius family on business matters.

Chaz Davies was Supersport World Champion, won 32 races in the World Superbike Championship and was three-time World Champion in the premier production-based series. The Welshman, who in the twilight of his career also competed in the Endurance World Championship and MotoE, coaches alongside his team for the Marc VDS Moto2 team, where Aron Canet and Deniz Öncü have so far failed to achieve the desired top results at the Boscoscuro circuit in Italy. There are also clients for Davies’ team of experts in the MotoGP World Championship – though they are keeping a low profile on this front. The subject is also sensitive because it naturally involves observing, documenting and analysing the opposition.

The work is undoubtedly impressive, as SPEEDWEEK.com was able to observe first-hand whilst on site. Even boss Davies is racking his brains between sessions. “Within two hours of a session, our team delivers the complete analysis to the rider or team in question,” reports Davies. However, this is by no means limited to photos, videos or verbal information. The analysis contains a vast dataset for the riders.

Self-made: Davies develops his own analysis programmes

Every sector of a lap is analysed individually. What’s more, for every sector time, the corresponding video of that section is immediately linked to the analysis sheet. Colour-coded markings make it easy to spot differences in speed. Remarkably, Davies is a true self-made man – he has even helped develop some of the complex computer programmes used for the analysis himself.

The business has grown well. Davies now employs half a dozen staff to work for his clients. One of the members of the Davies crew is his brother-in-law, the equally prominent Eugene Laverty. The 13-time Superbike World Championship race winner is assigned exclusively to Yamaha’s factory team as a coach in the Superbike World Championship. The Irishman also visited Yamaha’s new motocross signing, Tim Gajser, during this season’s World Championship round in Frauenfeld.
