Classic ECMX Final in Sverepec: The 2026 European Champions have been crowned

Classic motocross on the rise

The Classic ECMX series is enjoying increasing popularity amongst participants, organisers and spectators alike. In perfect conditions, with summery temperatures and blue skies, 134 riders alone in Sverepec took to the track on their historic bikes from motocross’s ‘golden era’: from the classic BSA four-strokes to the legendary CZ two-strokes, the classic Maico twin-shock models, Husqvarna and Honda to the more modern EVO models with central suspension and water cooling – everything that motocross technology has produced over the decades was on display. In a word: impressive. The classic riders were able to pitch their tents in the fully tarmac-surfaced paddock area of the motocross venue.

Remarkably good turnout

Despite the midsummer temperatures and forecast thunderstorms, the spectator stands were well filled on Sunday. The covered grandstand was packed, there was a real festival atmosphere, and the forecast thunderstorms failed to materialise.

Downhill, freeride and motocross

Classic events are always an opportunity to meet the riders and hear some behind-the-scenes stories. Guido Tschugg, the overall winner of the Twinshock 50+ class, was himself a professional mountain bike downhill and freeride rider. Tschugg is a multiple German champion, a World Cup winner and has competed in various mountain bike disciplines at the World and European Championships. He has now discovered a passion for classic motocross and, despite a retirement in the second final, became European champion on his Twinshock Husqvarna.

Nearly 300 participants once again

A total of 284 riders from 14 countries took part in this year’s ECMX Cup. The track in Sverepec was challenging with its long ascents and descents, but the old hands of yesteryear mastered the track conditions without any significant problems.

Four titles went to Germany

The Czech riders were the most successful nation, claiming six titles. Roman Majer (Classic -50), Leopold Simak (Classic 60+) (CZ), Miroslav Nejedly (Classic 66+) (CZ) and Frantisek Bezdicek (Classic 72+) competed on Czech two-stroke bikes. Roman Majer Jr. claimed the title in the Super EVO 50 class on a Yamaha. Former World Championship rider Mikkel Caprani from Denmark also won both races in the Super EVO 50+ class at Sverepec on a Honda CR500, becoming European Champion.

Champions from Germany and Austria

Guido Tschugg (Twinshock 50+, Husqvarna), Peter Möhring (Twinshock 66+, Maico), Franz Allenberger (EVO 85, Suzuki), Ronny Herlitschke (EVO 90 50 – Kawasaki) are the European champions from Germany. Georg Hammerl from Austria won the title in the EVO 90 50+ class on a Kawasaki.

Day winners from Germany and Austria

Ronny Herlitschke (Kawasaki) secured victory in the EVO 50- class with a one-two finish, whilst Roland Schier (Honda) was the day’s winner in the EVO 50+ class with a 2-1 result. Josef Leitner from Austria (Yamaha) won the Twinshock 50+ category with a 3-1 result.

Sven Dietzmann (Maico 400) won the Twinshock 60+ class with a 2-1 result. Helge Mühlig (Suzuki 250) claimed the day’s victory in the Twinshock 66+ class with a 2-1 result and finished the championship in second place.

The future of the motocross track

Motocross continues to enjoy unflagging popularity in Slovakia, as evidenced by the spectator numbers over the weekend. It is to be hoped that the motocross venue and the natural track at Sverepec have a future. The team led by organiser Jozef Drozda were confident following the success of the ECMX final, as were the participants, of course. Sverepec 2026 was a huge celebration of motocross!
