Alex Marquez undergoes surgery: it involved plates, screws, wires and bursa

MotoGP runner-up Alex Márquez (Gresini Ducati) is currently only eighth in the overall standings after a mixed season. This made it easier for him to decide to undergo surgery on his shoulder and hand.

Following a dream 2025 season, which ended with him finishing second in the World Championship behind his brother Marc, Alex Márquez is having a difficult 2026. Following last weekend’s races in Malaysia, the Spaniard is eighth in the standings with 197 points, 39 points behind Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia) who sits ahead of him.

In the Sepang Sprint, Alex Márquez crashed whilst leading; in the Grand Prix, he finished third behind Marc and Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM). The 30-year-old had been riding fast, so everyone was all the more surprised when he announced that he would be undergoing surgery on Monday in Spain on his right shoulder, which had been injured since mid-May. “There was no other option,” Alex emphasised. “I’ve had problems since my crash in Barcelona. It’s become clear that three races in a row are too much for me and that now is the time to take action.”

Alex Márquez received comprehensive treatment

“I underwent surgery at the Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid, performed by Dr Samuel Antuna and his medical team, during which the plates and fixation devices I had in my collarbone and hand were removed,” Alex Márquez shared via his social media channels. “In addition, a small bursa in my shoulder – which serves to prevent friction between the tendons and the joint – was removed. This final procedure was carried out arthroscopically, meaning it was minimally invasive. The operation went without complications, and I’m now beginning my recovery at home.”

Alex Márquez will miss the race in Qatar this coming weekend; he plans to make his return for the Portuguese Grand Prix from 20–22 November in Portimão. The season finale in Valencia follows a week later.

Iker Lecuona will once again ride for Gresini in Qatar. The Superbike World Championship runner-up stepped in once again at Sepang for the injured Fermin Aldeguer. Should the youngster be back for the desert races, Lecuona will ride in place of Alex Marquez.
