Bastianini (5th): A perfect start, problems and a gift from Bezzecchi
Enea Bastianini (KTM Tech3) finished fifth in the MotoGP Grand Prix in Malaysia. He had difficulties with his RC16, which meant he nearly crashed on several occasions. In the end, there was a present after all.

KTM Tech3 star Enea Bastianini laid the foundations for a good weekend as early as Friday, when he raced to 7th place in free practice. The Italian also put in a strong performance in Saturday’s qualifying, setting the seventh-fastest time. In the MotoGP Spring race that afternoon, however, he could only manage 9th place – though he did at least pick up a World Championship point.
In Sunday’s Grand Prix, Bastianini set off at the start as if there were no tomorrow. From seventh on the grid, he raced his way up to fourth. After just a few corners, he also overtook Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia) and was already in third. But then he dropped back to sixth place in the melee. ‘La Bestia’ held this position until the final lap, when he managed to overtake Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi in Turn 14. Bastianini crossed the finish line in fifth place. He finished 10.896 seconds behind winner Marc Marquez (Ducati).
Bastianini: “It was a bit risky to brake on the kerbs at Turn 1”
Bastianini was able to resolve his problems at the start with his Tech3 crew. “We worked on it overnight to try something different. I already had a better start during the warm-up this morning. We were able to confirm that in the race. It was a bit risky to brake on the kerbs at Turn 1, but it was the only way to move up to the front in the first corner,” said Bastianini. “I was third going into Turn 6, but Ai (Ogura) braked a bit too late and we both had to run wide. I lost a few positions and tried to stay in the mix after that. It wasn’t easy, though, because I was having problems with the front tyre – just like on Saturday. That’s why I had to fight so hard during the race. It felt like I nearly crashed 20 times on the bike. But we have to be satisfied. We did a good job, because after yesterday I wouldn’t have thought I could put in such a good performance today.”
After Marco Bezzecchi made a mistake at Turn 14 on the final lap, Bastianini was able to slip through. An early Christmas present? “Yes, a bit,” smiled the KTM rider. “It was a little present. But whether it’s sixth or fifth place – it doesn’t make much difference. Third place would have been better.”
Enea Bastianini was the second-best RC16 rider at Sepang on Sunday. His KTM team-mate Pedro Acosta finished in second place.
