Bezzecchi ahead of his comeback: “If the feeling’s there, I’ll give it a go”

Just under four weeks after his serious crash at the Sachsenring, Marco Bezzecchi is back – ‘Bez’ arrived in the UK as planned and took part in the extraordinary opening event in the City of London. Following a successful public viewing event in the Outernet area attended by over 20,000 fans, the decision was made to move the opening round of the “Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Britain” from tranquil Silverstone to the capital.

It wasn’t long ago that Bezzecchi was regularly greeted and approached as the World Championship leader. In England, however, more patience was required. Following the disastrous outcome of the last four MotoGP events in Hungary (3rd/crash), the Czech Republic (crash/disqualification), the Netherlands (4th/crash) and Germany (did not start following a crash/injury), the number 72 rider had lost the championship lead. Marco Bezzecchi is now heading into the second half of the long 22-event season in fourth place. However, with just 24 points separating the top five in MotoGP, Bezzecchi certainly cannot be written off.

The rider from Rimini initially responded to the news of his return: “I’m very happy to be back – the welcome has been brilliant. My summer break turned out a bit differently than I’d hoped. For me, it was all about training and recovery. As well as my shoulder, my injured left knee also needed a lot of work. One thing’s for sure – I’m not at 100 per cent – but I’m here!”

Bezzecchi is returning, of all places, to the very track where Aprilia secured its first MotoGP victory just under 15 months ago. The connection is therefore a special one. “My relationship with the track is a very special one, naturally also because of what happened here last year. That doesn’t make it any easier, because thinking only about ‘performance’ isn’t entirely realistic. First of all, I’ll have to see how comfortable I feel on the bike. If I feel good, then I’ll give it another go.” By this, he meant nothing other than turning the tide and returning to the top.

Bezzecchi’s view on his situation: “The start to the season was very strong, whilst things have been anything but positive recently. You generally learn more from the tough moments. What counts here is a good team – and that’s what I have. Our relationship is close and helps me. Giving it our all together right through to the end of the year – that’s what we’re doing.”

And looking ahead to the World Championship battle: “I think it’ll carry on like this for a while yet, with a whole bunch of riders fighting for the top spot, but I also think I’ll be one of them.”

The situation in the premier class ahead of the two races in England: Jorge Martin leads the standings. Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura follows 14 points behind Martin. Marc Marquez is four points behind the Japanese rider, whilst Bezzecchi is another four points behind the world champion. Fabio Di Giannantonio, in fifth place, is just two points behind ‘Bez’.
