Honda steps it up: signing of Moto2 rider Alonso officially confirmed

It’s now official: David Alonso is also set to move up to the premier class after two years in Moto2. The Colombian, who lives in Spain and was the dominant Moto3 World Champion in 2024 riding for Jorge Martinez’s team, has signed a contract with the racing division of the world’s largest motorbike manufacturer.

The official statement reads matter-of-factly: “Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) is delighted to announce the signing of David Alonso on a multi-year contract for the MotoGP World Championship.”

“With a total of 20 wins, 30 podium finishes and nine pole positions in Moto3 and Moto2, Alonso has consistently exceeded expectations. He will make his debut on the Honda machine for 2027 at the test following the race in Valencia,” says his future employer, praising the new signing and, unsurprisingly, confirming his debut will take place at the test following the Valencia GP.

Notably, it remains unclear which team the rising star will ride for. It appears that HRC is currently keeping its options open as to which of the two young South American riders will take on the role of Fabio Quartararo’s team-mate at Honda HRC Castrol, and who will join Johann Zarco in the LCR customer team.
