KTM tests 850 prototype: Pol Espargaro celebrates comeback in Misano!

Two important test days are on the programme for KTM on Tuesday and Wednesday. SPEEDWEEK.com has learnt that the manufacturer from Mattighofen is using a private two-day test at the Misano World Circuit to push ahead with the development of the new 850cc prototype for the MotoGP regulations from 2027. The two test riders Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro will ride the prototypes.

Espargaro's return is a particular focus. The Spaniard will be back on a prototype for the first time in an official MotoGP test since injuring his left hand during a dirt track training session near his home town of Granollers in mid-April.

Although the injury proved to be relatively harmless, it still had noticeable consequences for KTM. Espargaro was not available as a replacement for the MotoGP project and was unable to deputise for the injured Maverick Vinales. Instead, the Austrian manufacturer had to fall back on Jonas Folger at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans.

Perfect conditions for testing the new 850cc KTM

With the test in Misano, Espargaro now returns to his actual area of responsibility. Together with Dani Pedrosa, the 35-year-old is one of the most important development riders in the MotoGP programme and is expected to provide crucial feedback for the bike that KTM is preparing for the new regulatory era.

From 2027, only 850 cubic centimetre engines will be used in the premier class instead of the current 1000cc engines. At the same time, aerodynamics will be restricted and various technical systems adapted. An intensive development phase is therefore already beginning for all manufacturers, although there are still a few months to go before the new regulations are introduced.

MotoGP World Championship

The conditions could hardly be better for the engineers and riders. After the Superbike World Championship made a guest appearance on the 4.2 kilometre long race track on the Adriatic last weekend, there is plenty of rubber on the tarmac. Sunny conditions and temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius are expected for Tuesday. On Wednesday, the thermometer is even expected to climb to around 30 degrees. As things stand, there is no risk of rain on either day. This should provide KTM with ideal conditions to test the new bike extensively and compare different configurations.
