Dutch TT: The schedule for the MotoGP weekend in Assen

This coming weekend, large numbers of German-speaking fans will once again be travelling to Assen to cheer on their MotoGP heroes at the ‘Cathedral of Speed’, the TT Circuit Assen. Until the 2020 season, which was affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Dutch circuit was the only venue on the Motorcycle World Championship calendar to have hosted a World Championship round every year since 1949.

The 4.555 km-long circuit features six left-hand and twelve right-hand bends, and the longest straight measures just 487 m. The most successful riders at Assen are Ángel Nieto (15 wins in the 50 and 125 cc classes) and Giacomo Agostini (14 wins in the 350 and 500 cc classes). Valentino Rossi, however, has the most wins in the premier class. In total, the Italian has won the Dutch TT eight times, including his 115th and final Grand Prix victory on 25 June 2017.

Last year, champion Marc Márquez won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix. In the World Championship standings, the two Aprilia riders, Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martín, are still in the lead. However, following the disastrous race weekends in Hungary and the Czech Republic, the strong Ducati riders have closed the gap. Fabio Di Giannantonio is third, 23 points behind, whilst Marc Marquez trails the leader by 40 points.

In Assen, alongside the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 classes, riders from the Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup and the Red Bull Rookies Cup will also be on the starting grid once again. The MotoGP Sprint on Saturday starts at 3 pm, and on Sunday the usual order will be maintained, with the Moto3 race starting at 11 am. The highlight will be the 26-lap MotoGP race at 2 pm.
