Outstanding: Jorge Martin (1st) put Marquez in his place and benefited

Jorge Martin won the MotoGP Sprint at the Red Bull Ring with an exceptional performance. It all began in the morning – Martin had already made a statement in Q2 by securing pole position. The Aprilia rider had left his rivals Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta trailing behind him.

The Sprint got underway with a duel between the championship leaders – as both Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez had gone into the race level on 274 points. Through Turn 1, Martin pushed the Ducati rider wide; in the first chicane, Marquez then pulled off a typical ‘MM93 manoeuvre’, which took the Aprilia rider off line. Martin completely lost his rhythm and dropped back to 8th place over the following 4.3 kilometres.

Martin’s comment: “The start was good, but the first lap was right on the limit. At first I thought my chance was gone – but then I fought hard on every lap – and I managed to stay focused.”

In the laps that followed, Jorge Martin took no prisoners. Despite a track limits warning, the number 89 rider charged on whilst still maintaining his precision. Alex Márquez followed Binder and Ogura. The World Championship elite – including his team-mate Bezzecchi and Marc Márquez – caught up as early as laps 7 and 8. The overtaking manoeuvres were executed cleanly and on the first attempt, each time at the end of the home straight. His revenge on Marc Márquez was thus more than successful.

The gap to Pedro Acosta was around 2.5 seconds. With three laps to go, luck came to his aid.

Jorg Martin after his surprise triumph: “It was also a race I thoroughly enjoyed – and I was lucky with Pedro’s crash. Otherwise, I would have finished second.”

The Madrid-born rider, who now has a three-point lead over Marc Marquez, continued: “To win after a race like that feels absolutely brilliant. I’m also absolutely delighted for the team, because they’ve ensured we have this pace. I hope we can now deliver this performance on Sunday as well.”
