Moto3, Qualifying: Pole position for Brian Uriarte – Almansa (Intact GP) 2nd.

On Friday in Spielberg, 14 Moto3 riders secured direct qualification for Q2 on Saturday: Almansa, Quiles, Carpe, Bertelle, Brian Uriarte, Danish, Esteban, Salmela, Ogden, Yamanaka, Cruces, Kelso, O’Gorman and Fernandez. Intact rider David Almansa and World Championship leader Maximo Quiles were also the fastest riders on the track on Day 1 at the Red Bull Ring. David Munoz is making his comeback in Austria. He broke his hip in a heavy crash during the Moto3 race in Hungary. Finishing 15th on Friday, the Intact rider missed out on direct qualification for Q2 by just 4 hundredths of a second. “We’re very happy to have him back. He showed some very good pace yesterday,” said team manager Peter Öttl.

Conditions were difficult in FP2 on Saturday morning. It had rained heavily during the night, which is why the track was still wet. The fastest time was set by KTM Ajo rider Brian Uriarte in 1:47.740 mins. Joel Esteban (MTA) followed just under three tenths of a second behind, whilst local hero Leo Rammerstorfer took third place. The Upper Austrian once again demonstrated that he had impressive pace on the Honda in wet conditions. Seven riders opted not to take part in the second free practice session due to the difficult conditions – including Quiles and Almansa.

Conditions were cool during Saturday’s qualifying sessions, with temperatures at 19 degrees Celsius. In Q1, Valentin Perrone, David Muñoz, Guido Pini and Eddie O’Shea made it through to Q2. Rammerstorfer, in sixth place, missed out on progression by just under three tenths of a second. Marcos Uriarte crashed at Turn 6 and Nicola Carraro at Turn 10.

The 15-minute Q2 session then saw the battle for pole position. After two minutes, Hakim Danish crashed in the chicane between Turns 2 and 3. He managed to right his KTM and continue. Almansa set the first notable fastest time of 1:40.132 mins. By way of comparison, the Moto3 lap record at Spielberg had been set by Maximo Quiles in 2025 with a time of 1:39.639 mins. Brian Uriarte was close behind.

One lap later, Almansa improved his best time to 1:39.708. Quiles was in second place, almost four tenths of a second behind.

Then came the final push for the fastest times. Almansa set a Moto3 lap record of 1:39.608 minutes! Quiles just managed to avoid a crash shortly before the end. There was a flurry of activity on the track. At the very last moment, Brian Uriarte just managed to beat Almansa – setting a lap record of 1:39.544 minutes!
