Rudi Moser: His voice has fallen silent, but his stories live on

Rudi Moser has died. The former Eurosport and ATV commentator passed away on 27 July, as SPEEDWEEK.com has already reported, completely unexpectedly whilst in hospital. The Graz native, who grew up in Zeltweg, was 62 years old and is survived by his partner and his son Paul.

In the 1990s, Moser shaped an entire generation of TV viewers as the voice of the Motorcycle World Championship on Eurosport. He initially commentated on the races alongside Dieter Braun, and later with Jürgen Fuchs. He subsequently moved to the Austrian private broadcaster ATV. However, his time there came to an inglorious end after he disregarded the broadcaster’s instructions and travelled to the Japanese Grand Prix on his own initiative.

Moser’s track presentations on ATV remain particularly unforgettable. Instead of relying on dry analysis, he would don a leather suit himself and ride the Grand Prix circuits on a superbike. Whilst the footage mostly showed him cruising at a leisurely pace in a single gear, Moser passionately described every bump, every bend and every challenge over his helmet microphone, as if he were in qualifying. The obligatory outstretched knee was, of course, a must. The huge discrepancy between the footage and the commentary gave the clips an unmistakable slapstick quality – and turned them into cult classics for many fans.

As well as motorcycling, Moser also provided commentary on Alpine Ski World Cup races for Eurosport for many years – always with his own brand of humour and a good dose of entertainment. He had previously begun his journalistic career at Antenne Austria and Radio Monte Carlo, where, amongst other things, he reported on Formula 1 and forged numerous contacts within the world of motorsport.

Anyone who knew Moser remembers him as an exceptionally sociable person. To some, he was a heavy drinker; to others, simply a bon vivant who savoured life to the full. Above all, however, he was a brilliant storyteller – it was no coincidence that his circle of friends nicknamed him ‘Radio-Rudi’.

After his television career, Moser returned to his second great passion: cooking. He had once learnt the craft from the leading Austrian chef Reinhard Gerer. He later rose to become head chef at a renowned country inn near Graz, before going on to work on cruise and expedition ships from 2015 onwards.

As recently as April, Moser was still behind the stove at a restaurant in southern Styria, delighting guests with regional cuisine. His distinctive voice has now fallen silent – yet the stories he told and wrote will live on in the memories of many motorsport fans.
