Junior Manx GP abandoned following crash; third win for Johnny Stewart

42 riders are gearing up for the Junior Manx Grand Prix on Glencrutchery Road. Eddy Wormald and Kevin Lavery in particular – who finished second and third respectively in the Sportbike Manx GP two days ago – are keen to make life a little more difficult for the winner, Johnny Stewart. Dan Sayle, who has entered the race at short notice, is another contender for victory.

For German newcomer Chris Meyer, the main priority is simply to complete the three-lap race. His compatriot Lorenz Rothärmel is unable to compete at all, having been injured in a crash during practice.

In sunny conditions, with pleasant temperatures and a light breeze around the Snaefell Mountain Course, it is indeed Sayle who, as a local, brilliantly capitalises on his home advantage to take the lead by the second intermediate time. But from Ramsey onwards, Stewart takes the lead and pulls into the pits five seconds ahead of Sayle.

Sayle, who has won the Tourist Trophy eight times as a sidecar passenger, manages to make up time from the Grandstand to Ballaugh Bridge, but subsequently loses ground steadily to his rival. He is 12.5 seconds behind going into the final lap. He has a comfortable 28.5-second lead over third-placed Eddy Wormald.

Just as some of the riders were embarking on their final 60.725 kilometres, the red flag was waved following an accident involving Liam Chawke, and the result was decided after two laps. The Irishman, who according to race officials sustained leg injuries, was in sixth place. Stewart thus secures his third victory in two days.
