What a race weekend at the German Motorcycle Grand Prix at and around the Sachsenring. With 261,813 visitors, a new record was set for the fifth year running at the new circuit, which opened in 1996 and has hosted the German round of the Motorcycle World Championship every year since 1998. And right in the thick of the action was Robin Siegert, who even played a leading role. In races 9 and 10 of the Moto4 Northern Cup, held as part of the supporting programme, the 15-year-old rider from Team Kiefer Racing – and protégé of former racing driver Philipp Hafeneger – Stefan Nebel and Dario Giuseppetti, clinched his seventh and eighth consecutive wins of the season and is now on the verge of securing the title with two rounds remaining.
Even during qualifying for the starting grids of both races, Robin Siegert indicated that, once again, victory would be his alone. The young rider from Lengefeld in the Ore Mountains was the only one to clock a lap time under the 1:30-minute mark. He was almost a second faster than the second-fastest driver, which suggested he might be in for two relatively comfortable races.
That was my best weekend of the year.Robin Siegert
And that’s exactly how it turned out. Both in the first race late on Saturday afternoon – following the MotoGP sprint race and marking the end of the day – and in the second race, which served as the opening act to the traditional race Sunday, Robin Siegert put in impressive soloruns, crossing the finish line as the winner with a lead of 6.183 seconds on one occasion and 3.401 seconds on the other.
An interesting side note: Following his victory in Saturday’s race, a rather rare occurrence took place: in his honour, exactly 55 years to the day after West German rider Dieter Braun’s victory at the GDR Grand Prix on 11 July 1971 at what was then the old Sachsenring, the West German national anthem was played once again.
Naturally, Robin Siegert was over the moon at the end, and his team and support staff were absolutely thrilled. The ‘Racer par excellence’ himself later commented: “The weekend was brilliant. Not just because of the sporting successes, of course, but also because of the huge number of fans who were there overall, and those who came specifically for me and supported me. That gave me extra motivation. Eight wins in a row are already incredible, but winning both races at the Sachsenring as part of the MotoGP was something else entirely. That was my best weekend of the year.”
Following his seventh and eighth consecutive wins of the season – setting a new record in the Moto4 Northern Cup – he added: “We were very focused throughout the weekend, but we also had lots of great moments with the team in between. That’s why I’d like to say thank you once again to everyone in the team, my supporters and sponsors, as well as my fans – without whom none of this would be possible.”
“I felt absolutely brilliant on the bike,” said Siegert, describing his races. “That allowed me to build up a good lead in both races, manage the pace well to maintain the gap, and ultimately secure the wins on both occasions. Eight wins in a row are, of course, incredible. We wouldn’t have expected that. We’ll carry on in the same vein at Oschersleben, where we can clinch the championship early. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Speaking on behalf of his dedicated support team, Philipp Hafeneger from Hafeneger Renntrainings summed it up as follows: “With his eighth consecutive victory, Robin has not only set a new record in the Moto4 Northern Cup, but – to the best of our knowledge – has even set a new world record in Moto4. As a team, we’re naturally very proud of this. Robin has impressively demonstrated this season that he’s ready for the next step. Now our full focus is on the upcoming race weekend at Oschersleben. Our clear aim is to secure the championship title early on there, whilst also fighting for victory once again. To achieve this, we must continue to work with concentration, maintain our focus and, despite our successes so far, keep both feet firmly on the ground.”
The next race in Oschersleben will take place from 31 July to 2 August at the Motorsport Arena there, once again as part of the Euro Moto series.
