Bassani on Ducati’s dominance: “It’s easy to lose motivation in such circumstances”
Axel Bassani (Bimota) had a solid weekend at the Superbike meeting in Donington. He made the most of it – the Ducatis were once again too strong. A seven-week summer break is too long for him.

Bimota riders Axel Bassani and Alex Lowes achieved good results at the Superbike event in Donington. Sunday, in particular, proved a successful day for the pair. In the Superpole race, Lowes finished fourth and Bassani fifth. In the second main race in the afternoon, the pair once again finished fourth and fifth – but this time Bassani was ahead of his team-mate.
“We had a really positive Sunday at Donington. In the morning, we tried something new on the bike – on the front end – and I really liked it. It helped me improve the bike’s behaviour under braking,” explained Bassani. “Fifth place in the Superpole Race was really good. Race 2 was more difficult because it was hotter and there was a lot of wind. I had a few problems with the bike midway through the race, but after a few more laps I was able to get back up to a good pace.”
Starting from fifth on the grid, Bassani didn’t get off to a good start in Race 2. But then he managed to work his way up the field step by step. In the closing stages, he overtook his team-mate Lowes. Bassani crossed the finish line in fourth place – 8.5 seconds behind Barni Ducati rider Yari Montella, who finished third.
Bassani can be satisfied with his weekend at Donington. He and Alex Lowes were once again the second-strongest force in England behind the Ducati aces Nicolo Bulega, Iker Lecuona and Montella. “I think finishing 9th, 5th and 4th – and the fact that we’ve steadily improved this weekend – show that we’re on the right track,” confirmed the 26-year-old. “I’m happy. But when you look at the Ducatis, it’s easy to lose a bit of motivation. However, we need to focus on ourselves. I’m really pleased with the work we’re doing with the team. A huge thank you to them, because they keep working and never give up. Now we have a long summer break and some time to recover, but we’ll keep working towards the next race. A seven-week break is simply too long. For Ducati, three or four months would certainly be fine too,” joked Bassani during the post-race press conference.
In the overall standings, Axel Bassani lies in sixth place with 153 points after eight race weekends. Following the summer break, the ninth round of the season will take place from 4 to 6 September at Magny-Cours in France.
