Albert Arenas: World Championship title within reach, future still open

Albert Arenas moved from the Moto2 World Championship to the Supersport World Championship last winter and immediately found his feet on the Yamaha R9. With strong performances and consistency, he rose to the top of the championship. In the first race at Cremona, the Spaniard finished second and gained further points on his championship rival Valentin Debise on the ZX Moto. The title is drawing closer – but Arenas does not yet know what lies ahead.

“That’s a good question – what will happen next year?” said Arenas when asked by SPEEDWEEK.com about his future. For now, he doesn’t want to let the search for a ride for 2027 distract him from the title fight: “Winning the championship is getting closer. My focus has to be entirely on that. It might look easy from the outside, but it isn’t. We’re fully focused.”

Arenas aims to compete in the Superbike World Championship with Yamaha

His sporting goal for the coming season, however, is clear. He wants to make the step up to the next category. “My aim is to continue developing as a rider. And that means I should be racing in the World Superbike Championship next year,” Arenas clarified.

Arenas is working with Yamaha to find a solution for 2027: “I’m looking at options and trying to work out with Yamaha what the right decision is.”

Ideally, Arenas would like to make the step up with the manufacturer that enabled him to move into the Supersport World Championship. However, there is as yet no clear prospect for him within the Yamaha camp. “I’d really love to do that, yes. But they told me a few months ago that it isn’t possible due to the circumstances,” said Arenas regarding a Superbike campaign with Yamaha. He hasn’t given up hope: “We’re still trying to find a way.”

Despite the uncertain future, Arenas emphasised how much the manufacturer’s support means to him. “I’m very grateful to them for the opportunity they’ve given me here. And I think I’m honouring that opportunity with the best possible performances.”

Another year in the Supersport World Championship is also an option for Arenas, though only as an alternative to his hoped-for promotion. “That is, of course, one of the options, but to be honest, it’s not my preferred scenario. I want to keep developing.”
