For a decade now, the ‘Cancer Fund for Children’ has been the official charity partner of the Football Association of Ireland. Support is provided not only to the young patients themselves, but also to their families, who are faced with the devastating diagnosis of cancer.
Funds are raised through various initiatives, in which well-known personalities also take part, and these funds are used, amongst other things, to run the ‘Daisy Lodge’. This is a five-star, hotel-style therapy centre where affected families can take a break and recharge their batteries.
As a huge football fan, it was only natural for Jonathan Rea to take part in one of these events – especially as the six-time Superbike World Champion has two sons who play football himself. During a charity run around the pitch at the Clearer Twist National Stadium in Belfast’s Windsor Park, Rea completed the final of the 120 laps planned. However, the Honda test rider used a road-legal CBR1000RR-R for the task. On artificial turf, it was probably the slowest lap of his life.
The distance covered is equivalent to the journey from Belfast to Daisy Lodge in County Down.
