Superbike World Championship Cremona Grid Race 2: Lorenzo Baldassarri sabotages himself

In the first SBK race on Saturday and the sprint race on Sunday, the riders will start according to their Superpole results. For the second main race on Sunday, which starts at 3.30 pm at the Cremona Circuit, there will be a revised starting grid. The top nine finishers from the sprint race will occupy the first three rows of the grid. The remaining riders, who will start the second race from 10th place onwards, will be positioned according to their Superpole results.

If, for example, the Superpole winner crashes in the sprint race, he will, in the worst-case scenario, drop back to 10th on the grid for the second race. The biggest loser is Lorenzo Baldassarri from the Ducati privateer team Go Eleven, who crashed in the Superpole race and took Kawasaki works rider Garrett Gerloff down with him. The rider currently sixth in the World Championship standings will drop four places from sixth on the grid. The biggest beneficiary in northern Italy is Honda ace Jake Dixon, who – following a botched qualifying session – moves up an astonishing nine places to ninth on the grid.

Remy Gardner of the Giansanti Racing Team will not be competing on Sunday: the Australian broke the fifth metacarpal bone in his left hand during a crash in FP2 on Friday afternoon, but still took part in Saturday’s race and finished twelfth. As the pain became increasingly severe, he withdrew from the Sprint and the second main race on Sunday morning.
