Decisive moment in the title race? Engel penalised for taking out van der Linde

In the closing stages of the second DTM race at the Sachsenring, Maro Engel collided with the rear of Kelvin van der Linde’s BMW M4 GT3, sending the Schubert Motorsport BMW spinning into the gravel trap. That was the end of the race for the South African.

The stewards handed the Mercedes-AMG driver a 15-second time penalty for the incident, as they deemed the experienced driver to have clearly caused the collision.

As a result of the penalty, Engel slips out of the points and thus suffers a massive setback in the title race. Instead of finishing fifth, the WINWARD Racing driver is now classified in 17th and last place. This means that championship leader Thomas Preining now has a 23-point lead over Maro Engel.
